11.09.05 Garrett, George P., Two Books of Essays: The Sorrows of Fat City: A Selection of Literary Essays and Reviews (written 1957-1990), and Going to See the Elephant: Pieces of a Writing Life, published in 1992 and 2002, respectively.

For our George Garrett biography see Death of the Fox: A Novel of Elizabeth and Raleigh at 11.0106.   In the two books of essays listed here Garrett discusses the War between the States, the traditions of Southern life and  manners, and how they relate to the  notable achievements of Southern literature.

By the way, “Going to see the elephant” was a Civil War soldier’s term for the first experience of combat.
