Our Review
Ryan (1838—1881), Catholic priest and Confederate chaplain, is best known for his poem on the fall of the Confederacy, “The Conquered Banner,” but he wrote much other verse during the war that was later collected in book form. Both Ryan and Henry Timrod have at times been called “the poet laureate of the Confederacy.”
