John Pendleton Kennedy (1795-1870) of Baltimore was a man of letters, congressman, and Secretary of the Navy.  

Abstract.

In Horseshoe Robinson, a classic of early American literature, Kennedy portrays the Revolutionary War in the South through Robinson, a stalwart sergeant and scout.

In Swallow Barn, or a Sojourn in The Old Dominion, Kennedy sketches the Virginia plantation lifestyle he experienced as a youth.
