Notes Concerning the Author
Stark Young (1881—1963) was a native of Mississippi and a prominent drama critic in New York. He was the author of the classic Southern novel So Red the Rose and one of the Twelve Southerners who wrote I’ll Take My Stand.
The book contains selected writings of over 100 Southern writers of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, many of them nearly forgotten. The book is a handy guide to Southern writing from earliest times up to its publication date. More importantly, the selections are not merely literary, but are chosen to be expressions of Southern life.
