Our Review:
Charles W. Ramsdell (1877-1942) was a professor of history at the University of Texas, highly regarded in his time as a scholar of the War between the States era. Kizer has collected many of his articles, including the classics, “Lincoln and Fort Sumter,” “The Natural Limits of Slavery Expansion,” and “Carl Sanburg’s Lincoln,” among others. This is a great exhibit of historianship from the days when scholarship was serious research, careful reasoning, and clear writing.
