Notes Concerning the Author

John Gould Fletcher (1886-1950) was born in Little Rock, Arkansas.  His father was a Confederate veteran.  He was educated at Harvard University and spent 25 years afterward in England.  He had a wide range on interests, including literature and poetry.  His perspective on education in the North and in the South is from a position of observation beyond day-to-day interaction.

Abstract

Dr. Clyde N. Wilson recommends that this essay on Southern education be highlighted in the website under the education section because of it’s insight on “the great importance of classical education in the Old South.”
