07.01.11 Jefferson Davis, Private Letters, 1823-1889, by Hudson Strode, published in 1966.

Notes Concerning the Author

Hudson Strode (1892-1976) was an author and professor of creative writing at the University of Alabama, where he taught from 1916 until his retirement in 1963.  His biography of Jefferson Davis was the best ever produced and is a top recommendation of the Society.  In the process of gathering information for his work on Davis, he obtained the right to publish many private letters, which constitute a wonderful window into the family life of this great patriot of the Southern States.

Our Review

Any study of the President of the Confederate States of America and his exceptional wife, Varina, should include Strode’s volume of the Private Letters.
