07.01.07 Jefferson Davis, Unconquerable Heart, a biography by Felicity Allen, published in 1999 by University of Missouri Press.

Notes Concerning the Author

Felicity Allen is an independent scholar.  She lives in Auburn, Alabama.

Felicity Allen’s biography of Jefferson Davis is recent, exhaustively researched and beautifully written life story.  The dust jacket concluded with this assessment:

“Jefferson Davis, Unconquerable Heart brings Davis to life in a way that has never been done before.  The variety of his experience, the breath of his learning, and the consistency of his beliefs make this historical figure eminently worth knowing.”

The Society recommends as a first choice the acquisition of the three-volume biography by Hudson Strode.  But that does not give reason to overlook the fine work of Felicity Allen.  Nothing wrong with viewing both as entirely worthy of your attention.

On the other hand, the Society discourages becoming involved with a Davis biography by any other authors than Strode or Allen, for only those two are worthy of your time.
