05.05.20 Pollard, Edward A., Southern History of the War, 2 vols., published in 1866

Our Review

This work was begun during the war, and offers a contemporaneous view of the events as they evolved as provided by the articulate and intelligent editor of a Richmond newspaper. The author addresses a wide and comprehensive range of topics, including Lincoln’s duplicity at Ft. Sumter, the Northern theory of political authority, political relations between the US and Russia, the slavery question and the war, POWs North and South, fundamental political philosophies North and South, Jefferson Davis’ removal of Joseph Johnston from command, and last ditch prospects for Southern Independence.
