Notes Concerning the Author
Gary B. Mills was professor of History at the University of Alabama. There is a revised and expanded edition by Elizabeth Shown Mills in 2013.
In this work, Mills tells the unknown story of a large community of free African-Americans in northwestern Louisiana prior to the War between the States—people who owned vast plantation acres and hundreds of slaves and lived well-educated, cultured, and peaceful lives.
