Gary B. Mills was professor of History at the University of Alabama.  There is a revised and expanded edition by Elizabeth Shown Mills in 2013.

Our Review

In this work, Mills tells the unknown story  of a large community of  free African-Americans in northwestern Louisiana prior to the War between the States—people who owned vast  plantation acres and hundreds of slaves and lived   well-educated,  cultured, and peaceful  lives.
