Our Review

The editor has collected authentic testimony about the encounters between slaves and Union soldiers that took place in South Carolina in the course of Sherman’s devastating progress moving his vast army northward from Savannah, Georgia through central South Carolina toward his goal in North Carolina.  The book provides a realistic antidote to events that are sometimes viewed sentimentally.  In most cases, encounter with the “liberators” was not a positive and uplifting experience for black Southerners.  This book explains why.
