Edmund Wilson (1895—1972) is considered one of the foremost literary critics of the United States in the 20th century.

In this work, Wilson explores writings, fiction and nonfiction,  by  people on both sides who lived through the War between the States.  He is particularly insightful on the darker side of such Northern figures as  William T. Sherman.
