Notes Concerning the Author

Douglas Southall Freeman (1886 – 1953) was an American historian, biographer, newspaper editor, and author.  He is best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington, for which he was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes.

But, here we are looking at a far less celebrated work by this esteemed historian and writer, this one published as one volume in 1939, which represents a relatively early study sandwiched between the 4-volume Lee biography (1934-1935) and his other history concerning Lee, which he titled, Lee’s Lieutenants (3 volumes, 1942-1944).  The biography of George Washington was published in 1948-1957 as 7 volumes, the last completed and published posthumously.
