Robert Beverley (ca. 1673-1722) was a native and inhabitant of Virginia Colony when he wrote this history and arranged for it to be printed in London. In this history Robert Beverley describes his beloved homeland. His is the first book from what would become the Southern States which naturally is also the first American book.
Abstract
This work by a native of Virginia Colony represents one of the very first histories of European settlement of North America. The History and Present State of Virginia is presented in Four Parts. Robert Beverley was “a Native and Inhabitant of the Place.”
I. The History of the First Settlement of Virginia, and the Government Thereof, to the Present Time.
II. The Natural Productions and Conveniencies of the Country, Suited to Trade and Improvement.
III. The Native Indians, Their Religion, Laws, and Customs, in War and Peace.
IV. The Present State of the Country, as to the Polity of the Government, and the Improvements of the Land.
