Notes Concerning the Author

Leon F. Litwack (1929-     ), was born in California and received his B.A. in 1951 and Ph.D. in 1958 from the University of California at Berkley.  Afterward he taught history at universities in Wisconsin, South Carolina and Colorado.  His history on Negroes in the northern states, published 3 years after gaining his doctorate, drew, one would assume, upon his work at Berkley leading to his PhD.

North of Slavery: The Negro in the Free States, 1760-1860 is a tabulation of events that define the history of Blacks north of Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri.  This is a good companion to the work also recommended, and similar in that it is a catalog of events, which was written by Peter M. Bergman, titled, The Chronological History of the Negro in America.  Together these two works should equip you will a good reference source on the subject.
