Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek (Southern-born) are a Tennessee farm couple struggling to save their land and survive the ravages of nature, poverty, and development. Though apparently taking place a little later in time, the film is reflective of the experiences of some of the Southern families uprooted by the New Deal’s Tennessee Valley Authority.
