Ride with the Devil was released in 1999. A compelling and realistic depiction of Northern depredations along the Missouri/Kansas border during the War Between the States and the Southern resistance. Faithfully based on the novel Woe to the Living by Daniel Woodrell, who also wrote the highly acclaimed Winter’s Bone, also made into a decent if gritty film. Ride with the Devil was created by the Chinese director Ang Lee. Perhaps no American today could have presented so honest a portrayal.
