Our Review:

Comer Vann Woodward (1908-1999), a native of Arkansas and long-time professor at Yale University, is widely regarded as the foremost historian of the South writing in the 20th century.   In this his most important work, Woodward set a pattern in which most historians have since dealt with this period of Southern history, whether they agreed with him or not.   ORIGINS OF THE NEW SOUTH incorporates themes pursued in other of Woodward’s books:  TOM  WATSON: AGRARIAN REBEL,  REUNION AND REACTION, and  THE STRANGE CAREER OF JIM CROW, as well as  other aspects of the Southern history    As a writer, Woodward liked  irony.  He was invariably critical  of the South.  At the same time he was not a believer in Northern righteousness.
